Why Canada Loves Mike Weir
Canada has produced very few professional golfers. Not surprising when you consider that there is only one small area in the country where golf is played year round. In the world of sports, Canada is known more for the winter Olympics and hockey than it is known for golf. But golf is very popular in Canada and when a champion emerges, the whole country takes note.
Mike Weir had a following in Canada even before he won the Masters in 2003. After that win, he was elevated to celebrity status, with the whole country behind him. Fans will be watching and hoping he does well in the upcoming Canadian Open, the last major in the PGA tour this season.
But winning the Masters isn’t the only reason Canada loves Mike Weir. To understand why, you have to know a bit about Canada. Our country has always had an identity crisis. Our history and the institutions, as a result of our history, are distinctly British. The Queen of England is still our head of state and her portrait still adorns our currency. Our culture and our economy are very American. Watch television or walk through a shopping mall in Canada and you will not see any difference to the United States.
Yet, somehow, out of this identity crisis, forged between these two powerful influences, some things that are distinctly Canadian have emerged. Canada tends to be a quiet, stable, good-natured, unassuming nation that tries its best and occasionally, as a result of trying its best, takes the world stage with an outstanding accomplishment.
Mike Weir has these same characteristics - a quiet, unassuming, good-natured golfer who tries his best and occasionally accomplishes something outstanding. Whether consciously or unconsciously, I think Canada recognizes Mike Weir as a symbol, as someone who typifies the nature of Canada. That is why Canada loves Mike Weir.
Win or lose at the Canadian Open, Mike Weir will always have a following in this country. Of course, we hope he wins and becomes the first Canadian to win this golf event since 1954. Good luck Mike, Canada is behind you.
